Disabled Fla. First Responders Eligible for Tax Break

News Jul 27, 2017

July 27—BARTOW—First responders who are totally and permanently disabled because of an injury sustained in the line of duty are eligible for a property tax exemption under an amendment to the Florida Constitution passed in November.

The new exemption, which took effect Jan. 1, applies to law enforcement officers, correctional officers, firefighters, emergency medical technicians and paramedics.

While the exemption is retrocative to Jan. 1, the Polk County Property Appraiser’s Office has not received the exemption forms from the Florida Department of Revenue.

Those who believe they qualify for the exemption, should contact the Property Appraiser’s Office. Once the office has the proper forms, they will contact you.

The Property Appraiser’s Office can be reached at or call 863-534-4777 from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday except for holidays.
